QUESTION:

Dear Coach,
I love gymnastics. I am 14, and I have just started out. I am ahead of my beginner class thanks to books and the internet. I would like to improve my upper body strength, how do I do that? My family thinks I should do recreational but I want to compete, I wanted to go to the Olympics but I doubt that will happen. My goal is to reach at least level 6 by the time I am 17. If I exceed it, good for me, if I don’t, Oh well, always next year. My only problem is that I would have to take a weekday 1hr 30min class. My gym is so far away I wouldn’t be able to make it. I really want to compete. How do I show my coach that it would be worth her while to come down here where I live and teach me at the YMCA?
-- Thanks, Courtney

ANSWER:

Dear Courtney,
It is really great to hear about your enthusiasm for gymnastics!  You have the right attitude and a great desire to learn and that will carry you as far as you would like to go in any sport you choose.  First off, keep your attitude as positive as possible.  This will do a couple of things for you - first, it will allow you to feel good about your accomplishments in gymnastics regardless of the level you achieve.  One of the things that I try to tell my gymnasts is that they need to like what they are doing in gymnastics and have fun at it.  Second, it will make you a gymnast that is a true pleasure to coach.  When you are a gymnast that is enthusiastic and willing to make the corrections the coach is giving, you will get the most out of every minute you are in the gym and feel great about your accomplishments.

--Thanks, Cay

ANSWER:

Dear Cay,
When you are doing your cartwheels on the beam there are a few things you need to make sure you do.  Below I will list some of the most important things to work on and also a small list of drills to help make your cartwheels better on the beam.  Finally make sure you listen to the corrections your coaches give you.  Thanks for writing and good luck!
